Proxy Dashboard Guide Part 2: Testing Proxies with cURL

Published:  at  04:00 PM

Once you’ve created your user credentials in the dashboard, it’s essential to test them to ensure everything is working correctly. The simplest way to do this is with cURL, a powerful command-line tool available on virtually every operating system.

The Basic cURL Proxy Command

The core structure for making a request through a proxy with cURL uses the -x flag. Here is the template:

curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@proxy.ekogenix.com:PORT http://target-website.com

Let’s break that down: curl: The command itself. -x: The flag that specifies the proxy server to use. http://USERNAME:PASSWORD: The credentials you created in the dashboard. @proxy.ekogenix.com:PORT: The address and port of our proxy server (check your dashboard for the exact address). http://target-website.com: The website you want to make the request to.

How to Test Your Connection

A great way to test your proxy is to ask a website “What is my IP address?”. We can use a service like ipinfo.io for this.

  1. Get Your Credentials: From your dashboard, copy the username, password, proxy address, and port.
  2. Run the Command: Open your terminal or command prompt and paste the command, replacing the placeholders. Example:
# Replace with your actual credentials!
curl -x http://user123:pass456@proxy.ekogenix.com:8080 http://ipinfo.io/json
  1. Analyze the Output: If successful, you will receive a JSON response that looks something like this:
{
  "ip": "123.45.67.89" // This should be the proxy's IP, NOT your own!
}

If the “ip” field shows the IP address of the proxy server and not your home or office IP, your connection is working perfectly! If you get an authentication error, double-check your username and password.
